- This is not a Christmas album! But, it was supposed to be. The original plans I had were for the score to be comprised of all Christmas music but soon it became clear that this was just not the right fit. Let’s face it, "Joy to the World" isn’t the most sensible piece to back the collapsing core of a massive star before it explodes, cataclysmically, as a supernova. No, this is a soundtrack for a planetarium show, first and foremost, and the sound and feel of the music needed to match the topics discussed. That said, there is quite a bit of Christmas music sprinkled in throughout. Some parts are very true to the melodies and others are subtle and rely on motifs and deconstructed versions of the notes. The common theme that connects both the traditional and the space music is this: The Magi had a dream that revealed the intentions of the wicked King Herod and that Herod’s purpose for sending his Magi was ultimately to learn where Jesus was so Herod could kill Him. The most important act of the Magi was this dream preventing that. Therefore, the entirety of the score is meant to be a 'musical dream.' An ethereal meditation on faith, science, astrology and history: four disciplines that never seem to get along yet all must come to the table to tell this story of the Star of Bethlehem.
